Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What Internet Browser should I use?
Internet Explorer is the preferred Internet Browser for The Income Tax School Courses.

When I click on a link I end up at www.simplydigi.com. Why?
You are probably not using the preferred Internet Browser, which is Internet Explorer.  Try switching to Internet Explorer, if you are not currently using it, and try the same action again.

I have completed a section but it is showing up as if I have not completed it. Why?
This may be because you do not have your Internet Browser set up to refresh itself automatically.  Try going to Tools in your browser menu, then Internet Options. Under the General tab there should be a button labeled Settings.  Make sure that you have it selected to automatically check for newer versions of stored pages.  Change it to do so if it doesn't already say that and be sure to save your changes.  Now log back into the school site and see if you can see most recent work.

Also, at the end of the Chapter, on the last page, you should click on NEXT PAGE again.  Don't click on EXIT.

What do I do with my Review Problems and Learning Activities? Do I need to submit them to my instructor?
If you have completed an assignment (homework, class problems, quiz, exam) offline, just make sure to enter your answers in online.  All online assignments are either True/False or Multiple Choice.  They are also automatically graded.  So, you don't have to submit anything to your instructor.

What happens if I fail a section?
Don't worry!  You have three chances to pass the online exams with a score of 70% or better.

Last year we had several students who we discovered were cheating when taking the online exams. They were able to do this because we allowed students to retake the online exams until they passed with a grade of 70% or better.

We took a great deal of time considering our choices in this matter. We believe it was unfair to allow students who did not earn their certificates honestly to continue and we had to put a stop to this. For this reason, the online exams in the 2009 courses have a limit of 3 attempts to pass.

However, we need the students to be aware that if you fail any online exam 3 times then your course will be reset. You will be required to restart your course from the beginning.

We believe the students who read the material and prepare for the online exams will not have a problem passing within the allowed 3 attempts. All exams are open-book and we supply you with the questions and answer choices before ever launching the online exam.

(For students taking a course older than the 2009 courses, you will be allowed to retake the online exams as many times as needed until you pass with 70% or better.)

What if I think there is a mistake in the course?
Please let us know right away if you think there may be a mistake in the course you are taking.  If you notify us of a potential error and we agree with your findings, it will help you and other students move more quickly through the course.  We do make updates to the site when we become aware of an error or typo.

Do I have to do everything online?
No.  You can download your chapters, reading assignments, class problems, homework and exams ahead of time.  Many students complete their assignments offline and then just plug their answers in online.  This keeps you from feeling rushed.  Students with a dial-up connection find this especially helpful because of the slower connection.

I just registered yesterday and got my user id/password today. I am excited to get started but was wondering if you recommend I wait for my book?
You can if you want to; however, everything you need is available online. The book is a great tool to have while taking the course so you don’t have to print everything out and everything is in one place. It is also a great reference after you finish the course. Feel free to start your course now and just download anything you need until your book comes. It should only be a few days.

Is there a time frame that I need to finish each chapter or assignment?
All of our online courses are completely at your own pace. The only timeframe you have depends on which course you are taking. Courses with 30 hours or less – you have 4 months to finish from the date of registration. Courses with more than 30 hours – you have 6 months to finish from the date of registration. If you find that you need longer than that, you may reinstate for another term for a nominal fee.

DO NOT USE FUNCTION KEYS OR COPY/PASTE OPTIONS
IMPORTANT:
Please do NOT use the Function (F1- F12) Keys or try to Copy and Paste anything through out the course.  This will cause the system to reset your course from the beginning.  If you would like copies of the chapters, please use the Chapter List link at the top of each instructional page.  For homework questions, please contact the Instructor at instructor@peoplestax.com

Is there a time limit with the online courses?
No.  However, if you are logged into the course long enough and there is no activity it may time out.  If you were in the middle of a graded assignment and did not complete it, then it may show that you failed the section.

If you fail any online exam 3 times then your course will be reset.  (Please view the Online Exam Policy below.)  For this reason you should be careful that you do not launch any of the online exams until you are ready to complete the entire exam.  All exams are open-book and we supply you with the questions and answer choices at the end of each chapter.  We have found the best method is to complete the exam offline on the printed copy (from your textbook or you can print a copy if you did not receive a textbook) before attempting to take the exam online.

I keep getting a clipboard access message while taking exams with Internet Explorer. How do I fix this?

Microsoft has made some major changes to their Internet Browser, Internet Explorer and the way that it handles security.  This causes issues with some web sites on the internet.  One persistent problem with the new security settings is a "Clipboard Access" verification text box when using forms on the web.  To fix this follow these instructions.

  1. Go to the Tools > Internet Options menu in Internet Explorer .
  2. Select the Security Tab of Internet Options and then select Trusted Sites.
  3. Select the Sites button below the zone window in the tab
  4. In order to add the university’s address to the Trusted Sites list, you will need to enter the full URL path in the textbox if it is not already there. The URL path for the school is http://www.theincometaxschool.net
  5. Each university has a unique address, so be sure the full path, including http://, is correct before selecting Add.  You may also need to unselect the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone as well.
  6. Once you have the URL added select close .
Now, we will need to Allow Programmatic clipboard access for your Trusted Sites zone.  This can be done from the Security Tab by selecting the Trusted sites zone then selecting “Custom level. . .” in the Security level dialog of the Security Tab.
  7. Once the Security Settings dialog box is open you will want to scroll to the Scripting area and look for “Allow Programmatic clipboard access”.
  8. Change this to “Enable” .
  9. Select OK and OK again on the Internet Options dialog window.

If I E-mail for help, how soon will I hear back from an Instructor?
An instructor will respond within a maximum of 2 business days. Response time is usually within the same day of your question if it is during the work week. Your instructor is not just an academic professor. All of The Income Tax School’s instructors work in the tax business and deal with taxpayers and tax issues on a daily basis.

I'm taking the CA Comprehensive course. It's asking me to prepare a return but I don't have any Federal information.

2006 Federal Telephone Excise Tax Credit
For all individual returns prepared for tax year 2006 please assume, unless otherwise directed by the information in the Learning Activity, that all taxpayers qualify for the Federal Telephone Excise Tax Credit.

How do I know if I have done the learning activities correctly if there are no answers or explaination of the answers? Please advise.
After you have completed both Chapter 1 Review Questions and Learning Activity, you will then be able to go into Chapter 2 course material.  There you are provided a link to the answer key for both Chapter 1 Review Questions and Learning Activities.  The answer key includes feedback to explain the answers along with chapter page numbers where that material was covered.  The subsequent chapter always has the previous chapter’s answer key throughout the course.

I'm taking the Oregon Comprehensive course. I don't have enough information to complete the returns.
